When is it useful to shrink-wrap goods in
intercontinental transport?
It's always
useful for goods that are susceptible to corrosion. The means of transport is
important here. When transporting by sea shrink-wraping is highly advisable
because goods encounter the highest temperature differences there. In addition
all shiny and sensitive parts need to be protected form the salty sea-air.
By air transport one has to assess how the shipment will be handled at destination. Air transport is the fastest way to reach the consignee. Shrink-wraping won't always be needed. But when a long road transport follows especially in tropical climates shrink-wraping is useful. The same is valid for long storage times at the building site or when stored out of doors at the consignee. Which kind of packaging should I use for
which means of transport?
This depends on the shipped goods. The
safest way in intercontinental freight forwarding is the export crate. There
are several very different versions though and some other solutions are
possible, too. We can find the most optimal individual solution for
you. What are HPE-guidelines?
HPE is an
umbrella organization for export packers and producers of wooden packagings.
They give the basic construction varieties for wooden packaging and packing
amethods. By complying with these guidelines the packer is legally save. All
non-members construct and pack according to these guidelines and secure their
own quality standard by doing so. It is not compulsory to be a member of the
HPE. But most of the companies refer to complying to these guidelines. If they
don?t do it, be careful!
What does IPPC mean?
The IPPC (International Plant Protection
Convention) is a sub organisation of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation
of the United Nations). By it the phyto sanitary regulation for the
international trade of wooden packagings (ISPM 15) was passed. An acrredited
skilled company you can recognize by the IPPc logo with the official
registration number of the company. Each wooden packing device must be marked
with it. This saves a lot of trouble in countries which comply with the IPPC
standard. Avoid unregistered companies and their supposedly favorable
offers. Can I, as shipper, pack dangerous goods
myself?
In principle, yes. Yet you must have
provable trained and regularly re-trained staff. Plus the necessary legally
required packagings. This is, if ever, only useful when big quantities are to
be sent. Solely for liability reasons it ?s advisable to use a certified
skilled company like us - to pack the dangerous goods for you. What is the difference in case of damage
whether it is caused by wrong transport or wrong packaging?
When no clear decision can be made on the
cause of the damage an accident commissioner will be asked. The shipper is
therefore advised to provide a documentation and photograph of the used
packaging including the delivered shipment. In most cases this measurement is
sufficient to make the commissioner come to a decision. What difference does it make whether I let
the shipment be packed at our own premises or elsewhere?
Several factors need to be taken into
account. The main point is the space situation at your company and the
dimensions of the shipment. And in addition the availablility and performance
infos of the lift and loading devices at yours. The next question to ask is
whether the transport to the packing company is complicated, expensive or
relatively simple. How sensitive the goods are plays a major role, too. Most
often one of the points mentioned above makes clear where best to pack the
goods. To help you come to the right decision is our job. When do I use plywood or plain wood or the
so-called OSB as packing material?
Here the preferences of customer and packer
count. In general when using airfreight, plywood should be applied for gross
weight reasons. But otherwise one is relatively free in choosing one or the
other since there are no real price differences. One reason for plain wood is
the better disposal possibilities at destination. |
